Compliance with the 2020 ‘Global Sulphur Cap’- Provisional Guidance

The forthcoming mandatory implementation of the MARPOL Annex VI requirements to limit sulfur emissions to 0.50% for vessels trading globally outside sulfur Emission Control Areas (ECAs) comes in force on 1st January 2020 and has caused significant concerns for the industry.

The ICS has recently issued a guidance for shipowners, which please see find here; it provides an overview of the upcoming requirements with recommendations on developing an implementation plan to meet the mandatory deadline of 1st January 2020.

The ICS guidance assumes that the owner/operator has chosen to achieve compliance through the use of fuel oil with a sulphur content of 0.50% m/m or less (such as 0.50% blends or 0.10% distillate).
