Carrying Containers onboard Bulk Carriers

Due to the lack of enough container slots available in the market to satisfy the high demand, many bulk operators are currently evaluating the possibility of loading large quantities of containers on bulk carriers.

There are though some considerations regarding ships’ structure & stability, any hot works that may be required etc. as well as contractual aspects (e.g. CP provisions and B/L wordings).

Thus, Owners / Managers should seek prior approval & guidance from the following:

  • Flag
  • Class
  • Input of independent experts to assess and ensure the suitability of the vessel structurally for carriage of containers
  • H&M Underwriters
  • P&I Underwriters
